Super boost for CBS

CBS surged to season highs on Monday, seeing a nice post-Super Bowl bounce from its comedy block, which included good numbers for the premiere of “Rules of Engagement.” The Eye led the night among young adults.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “How I Met Your Mother” (3.9 rating/10 share in adults 18-49, 10.8 million viewers overall) kicked off the night for CBS with its best deliveries of the season, and sophomore “The Class” chimed in with the highest scores since its series premiere in September (3.6/9 in 18-49, 9.7 million viewers overall). Best news for the Eye, though, came in the 9 o’clock hour, where a guest appearance by Brooke Shields lifted “Two and a Half Men” to season highs (5.8/13 in 18-49, 17.8 million viewers overall), and new comedy “Rules of Engagement” followed with solid retention at 9:30 (5.2/12 in 18-49, 14.9 million viewers overall) — the best 18-49 score in the time period for CBS since May 2005.

CBS then took firm control of the 10 o’clock hour with “CSI: Miami” (5.7/14 in 18-49, 18.2 million viewers overall).

NBC ran second on the night in adults 18-49, led as usual by the timeslot-winning combo of “Heroes” (6.4/14 in 18-49, 14.6 million viewers overall) and “Deal or No Deal” (5.0/12 in 18-49, 17.3 million viewers overall). And at 10, “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” (3.2/8 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall) was up slightly from its recent airings but remained a distant runner-up in the time period.

Fox remained sturdy with “Prison Break” (4.1/10 in 18-49, 10.1 million viewers overall) and “24” (5.0/12 in 18-49, 13.6 million viewers overall), although this repped a season low for the latter.

ABC was on par with its recent deliveries with unscripted skeins “Wife Swap” (3.5/9 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall) and “Supernanny” (3.8/9 in 18-49, 9.6 million viewers overall), while 10 o’clock spec “InStyle Celebrity Weddings” (2.6/7 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) was in line with the week-ago averages for drama “What About Brian.”
