Only Yank fare in top 10 is 'CSI' franchise

MADRID — New bows “House,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “The Closer” wowed Spanish critics. And startup webs Cuatro and La Sexta bought swathes of newer Yank series last year. But the U.S. still has a long way to go to dominate Spanish airwaves.

According to just-published 2006 ratings, only two Yank imports — “CSI” and “Ice Age” — figured in last year’s top 50 TV transmissions in Spain.

Of the “CSI” franchise, segs of the original version, “CSI: Miami,” and “CSI: NY” collectively accounted for seven of the 50 most-viewed broadcasts.

Underscoring live sports’ sway over broadcast TV, the top 15 broadcasts all turned around major sports events.

Numero uno live broadcast: the nailbiting European Champions League soccer final, which saw Bar-celona come back from a goal behind to beat Arsenal 2-1.

Match scored a 41% share and 7.1 million viewers for TVE-1, the best ratings for a soccer game since 2004.

Top non-sports show was Spanish neighbors comedy “Aqui no hay quien viva,” averaging 5.3 million eyeballs, followed by, among domestic dramas, Telecinco medico skein “Hospital Central” (5 million), retro family drama “Cuentame como paso” (4.6 million) from pubcaster TVE, and family dramedy “The Serranos” (4.5 million), also a Telecinco primetime hit.

“House,” the hottest of U.S. rookies on Spanish free-to-air TV over 2006, averaged 3.4 million for a 18.3% share during its second season this fall.

That’s still a standout perf, however, more than doubling broadcaster Cuatro’s channel share.
