British soap airs in several international territories
LONDON — “Emmerdale,” one of Blighty’s longest running and most successful soaps, set in a quintessentially English semi-rural setting, is migrating to Romania.
Granada Intl. has sold 50 episodes of the awardwinning sudster to Romania’s Pro TV.
Quite how Eastern Europeans will relate to the down-to-earth melodrama of this sexually highly charged fictional English community is anyone’s guess.
But “Emmerdale” already plays in Canada (CBC), Ireland (TV3), the Middle East (Gulf DTH), Australia (UKTV), Sweden (TV4) and Finland (MTV3)
Said Sorina Big, acquisitions director at Pro TV, “We are thrilled to have acquired such a fascinating series as ‘Emmerdale.’
“We are very much hoping that the Romanian audience will find the stories and the rural English life appealing. We are confident this is a great product and we are hoping it will live up to its good name.”
