Gameshow pits host against contestants

Warner Bros.-based shingle ParaMedia has picked up U.S. rights to German web ProSieben’s hit format “Beat Your Host.”

The show, which pits its host against his own guests in contests of physical prowess, intelligence and luck, has become one of the most successful new formats on German TV, with audience shares reaching 30% in the key demo of people 14-49.

ProSiebenSat 1 sales arm SevenOne Intl. sold the U.S. format rights to ParaMedia to produce through Warner Horizon Television, which handles primetime reality programming for Warner Bros. Television.

Created and produced by Germany’s Raab TV and Brainpool, the show sets up challenges ranging from pole vaulting to geography tests to spreading soft cheese on a sandwich. If the contestants win, there’s a cash prize, but if they lose, the prize money goes into the jackpot to await the next contestant.

“The success of ‘Beat Your Host’ in Germany proves that the format works,” said ParaMedia’s Jim Paratore. In March, Scandinavian entertainment group Zodiak Television nabbed rights to the show for the U.K., Sweden and Finland. Zodiak is producing the various versions via its local production subsidiaries, Diverse Prods. in the U.K., MTV Mastiff in Sweden and T&T Broadcasters in Finland.
