‘Idol’ trounces competition

A key “American Idol” results show, in which two contestants were eliminated from competition, racked up big ratings Wednesday night, topping the other broadcasts nets combined during the night’s middle hour.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “American Idol” averaged a 10.8 rating/27 share and 28.1 million viewers overall from 9 to 10 p.m. — 20% better in 18-49 than what CBS, Univision, NBC, CW and ABC managed put together (9.0 rating in the demo). Fox also won the night’s opening hour, though with a more modest delivery, courtesy of “Bones” (3.0/10 in 18-49, 10.4 million viewers overall).

Second-place CBS started slowly with “Jericho” (2.2/7 in 18-49, 8.2 million viewers overall) but was a solid second in 18-49 both at 9 with “Criminal Minds” (3.5/9 in 18-49, 13.3 million viewers overall) and at 10 with “CSI: NY” (3.9/10 in 18-49, 12.9 million viewers overall). Latter, featuring a crossover appearance from “Cold Case” star Danny Pino, won the hour in total viewers.

ABC was competitive from 8 to 9 with “According to Jim” (2.2/7 in 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall) and “Notes From the Underbelly” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 6.1 million viewers overall) but then went dark at 9 with a repeat of “Lost” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall). At 10, an original episode of “Lost” (5.2/14 in 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall) won in all key demos.

NBC’s “Thank God You’re Here” continues to perform decently at 8 (2.4/8 in 18-49, 6.3 million viewers overall), but the net lagged from 9 to 11 with “Crossing Jordan” (1.6/4 in 18-49, 5.9 million viewers overall) and “Medium” (2.7/7 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall).

CW’s “America’s Next Top Model” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall) was competitive in 18-49 and again won its 8 o’clock hour in persons 12-34 (2.9/10), while “One Tree Hill” (1.5/4 in 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall), in its return following a hiatus, placed second to “Idol” among persons 12-34 (2.2/7).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 6.9/19; CBS, 3.2/9; ABC, 3.0/8; NBC, 2.2/6; CW, 1.9/5; Univision, 1.7/5.

In total viewers: Fox, 19.2 million; CBS, 11.5 million; ABC, 7.5 million; NBC, 6.6 million; CW, 4.2 million; Univision, 3.9 million.
