‘Idol,’ ‘House’ rule Tuesday

Ratings Flash - Rick Kissell

The powerhouse combo of “American Idol” and “House” lifted Fox to another commanding ratings victory on the opening Tuesday of the month, with the net beating the primetime averages of the other major nets combined.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “American Idol” (13.4 rating/33 share in adults 18-49, 33.1 million viewers overall) crushed the competition at 8, and was again up a bit vs. the same night a year ago. “House” (10.2/24 in 18-49, 25.0 million viewers overall) followed with one of its best perfs to date, off some from its record-setting delivery of a week ago but more than doubling its closest pursuer in all key categories.

CBS again held up best opposite “Idol,” as “NCIS” (3.9/9 in 18-49, 16.2 million viewers overall) was in line with its pre-“Idol” averages and finished second in most key categories. Original episodes of “The Unit” also placed second at 9 (3.6/9 in 18-49, 12.3 million viewers overall) and at 10 (3.3/8 in 18-49, 10.4 million viewers overall).

NBC was a bit more competitive than usual kicking off the night with its “Dateline” series on online predators (2.1/5 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall). Net then edged upward a bit at 9 with “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” (2.7/6 in 18-49, 8.9 million viewers overall) and prevailed as usual at 10 with “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (4.8/12 in 18-49, 13.4 million viewers overall).

ABC ran sixth at 8 o’clock with a repeat of “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (1.5/4 in 18-49, 5.6 million viewers overall) but improved its fortunes by dumping comedy at 9 for the premiere of newsmag “Primetime: The Outsiders” (2.6/6 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall). That helped boost “Boston Legal” (2.9/8 in 18-49, 9.8 million viewers overall) to slightly above recent levels.

CW was led by another solid outing for “Gilmore Girls” (2.0/5 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall), which placed second for the 8 o’clock hour among adults 18-34 (2.5/7).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 11.8/28; CBS, 3.6/9; NBC, 3.2/8; ABC, 2.3/6; Univision, 1.7/4; CW, 1.6/4.

In total viewers: Fox, 29.0 million; CBS, 13.0 million; NBC, 9.3 million; ABC, 7.7 million; Univision, 4.2 million; CW, 3.5 million.
