‘Housewives’ tops Sunday

“Desperate Housewives” ruled as Sunday’s top ratings draw, teaming with the rest of the net’s lineup to carry ABC to victory among young adults, while CBS and NBC were above average.

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, ABC swept the night in 18-49 with timeslot victories from “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (2.4 rating/8 share in adults 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall), “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (4.3/12 in 18-49, 11.6 million viewers overall), “Desperate Housewives” (projected 6.6/16 in 18-49, 17.1 million viewers overall from 9 to 10:02 p.m.) and “Brothers & Sisters” (projected 4.2/11 in 18-49, 10.9 million viewers overall from 10:02 to 11).

At CBS, “Amazing Race: All-Stars” (3.3/9 in 18-49, 10.5 million viewers overall) finished the season with its best regular-slot rating in eight weeks, leading into similarly above-average results for crime dramas “Cold Case” (3.2/8 in 18-49, 13.6 million viewers overall) and “Without a Trace” (3.7/10 in 18-49, 14.6 million viewers overall).

NBC also improved its fortunes with a special “Deal or No Deal” at 8 (2.2/6 in 18-49, 9.0 million viewers overall) leading into solid numbers for the two-hour “Saturday Night Live in the ’90s” (3.6/9 in 18-49, 7.9 million viewers overall). The “SNL” special delivered the net’s best numbers in the time period since January.

Fox started sluggishly with an hour of “King of the Hill” (1.6/6 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall for a repeat followed by an original) before placing second in the 8 o’clock hour among young adults with “The Simpsons” (3.7/10 in 18-49, 7.7 million viewers overall for an original followed by a repeat). “Family Guy” again performed well at 9 (3.8/9 in 18-49, 7.9 million viewers overall), with “American Dad” falling off some from there (2.9/7 in 18-49, 6.5 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 4.4/12; CBS, 3.0/8; Fox, 2.9/8; NBC, 2.8/8; Univision, 1.2/3; CW, 0.7/2.

In total viewers: CBS, 12.5 million; ABC, 11.9 million; NBC, 7.8 million; Fox, 6.2 million; Univision, 2.9 million; CW, 2.0 million.
