‘Dr. G’ Garavaglia signs book deal

Discovery Health series star pacts with Crown

The star of Discovery Health’s signature series “Dr. G: Medical Examiner,” Jan Garavaglia, M.D., has signed a book deal with Crown Publishing.

“How Not to Die: Surprising Lessons on Living Longer, Safer & Healthier From America’s Favorite Medical Examiner” will be in stores next October. Crown won the bidding for the book, paying a price in the mid-to-high six figures.

Although he declined to discuss dollar figures, Bruce David Klein, president and executive producer of Atlas Media Corp., which produces the “Dr. G” TV series, organized the negotiations for the book. Hammering out the deal were Heather Jackson, executive editor of Crown Publishing, and, for Atlas, Stephen Hanselman, founder of LevelFive Media.

Atlas is one of the most active producers of nonfiction programming, selling series to USA Network, History Channel, National Geographic Channel, A&E, Disney Channel, Travel Channel, TLC, Food Network and GSN, among other nets.

Klein put the book deal in the context of Atlas’ drive to “become a multimedia, multiplatform company.” One way to promote the book, he said, would be to talk up Dr. G as the real-life equivalent of the most popular fictional forensic pathologist, Dr. Kay Scarpella, the lead character in a string of bestsellers by Patricia Cornwell.
