CNN has tapped Newsweek Intl.’s editor Fareed Zakaria for a global news program.
Zakaria, a former “This Week” pundit and current host of PBS’ “Foreign Exchange With Fareed Zakaria,” said he wants to tell viewers about the wider world, “not just where the last bomb went off.”
The new CNN show doesn’t yet have a title, but Zakaria said it should be on the air in the next few months, “probably in the first quarter of next year.” It will be a mix of reportage and talk, and Zakaria hopes that CNN’s large number of foreign correspondents will contribute reporting to the show. The talk portion of the show also will focus on incorporating foreign perspectives.
“How many times have we had talkshows about Iraq, and the question is still, ‘What do Iraqis think about this?’ ” he asked.
Zakaria also will contribute analysis to other CNN programs. His show is set to air on both CNN/U.S. and CNN Intl.
