LONDON — The second leg of the crunch Liverpool v Chelsea tie in the semi-finals of the Champions League proved a massive result for Blighty’s biggest private terrestrial web ITV, peaking at a huge 40.2% percent share.
As the all-English tie in Europe’s premier soccer tournament went to a nail biting penalty shootout, it attracted a peak 11.8 million viewers.
The match averaged 8.9 million viewers – ITV1’s best audience for a soccer match since last World Cup.
The victory was especially sweet for the private web because the coverage dented the audience for BBC1 flagship soap, EastEnders, watched by 6.6 million viewers.
ITV1 will show the final from Athens May 23, when a potential tie between Liverpool and Manchester United could generate even higher viewing figures.
