HONG KONG — Celestial Pictures has launched a mobile channel which it will roll out across Asia. Kung Fu TV makes its bow in Thailand this month.
Channel is a made-for-mobile platform showcasing original martial arts content derived from Celestial’s 700-plus Shaw Bros. movie library. Segments, which range from 30 seconds to three minutes, include clips of fight sequences, music videos, trailers and video ringtones.
The channel launches on Advanced Info Service (AIS), Thailand’s mobile network system provider. Celestial expects to see channel next bow in Malaysia where company’s parent group Astro All Asia Networks is based.
Astro Wednesday reported first quarter earnings data for the three monthes to end April. It showed turnover up 11% at RM583 million ($168 million) and pay-TV subscribers up 14% at 2.08 million. But net profits tumbled 65% to $9.24 million as higher content acquisition costs weighed on results.
Hit by start up costs at its new joint venture in India, company warned that it could show an overall loss this year.
