LONDON — BSkyB’s Sky News regained the title of news channel of the year beating BBC News 24 in what was a dismal night for the pubcaster at the Royal Television Society’s Television Journalism Awards.
The BBC, which enjoys a global reputation for its newscasts, bagged only three gongs as rivals Sky and ITN dominated the list of winners at the event held at the London Hilton hotel Feb 20.
It was also a good night for the troubled ITV web, whose evening news won news program of the year award beating the Beeb and Channel 4.
Presenter of the year was Channel 4 veteran anchor Jon Snow while the lifetime achievement gong went to ex-Sky News editor Nick Pollard.
Accepting his award Pollard, who has also worked for ITN and the BBC, predicted the Beeb would return to winning form next year.
“They haven’t gone off the boil. They are still an outstanding news organization,” he said.
Sky News reporter Donimic Waghorn was voted TV journalist of the year.
The judges’ award was given to a group of Iraqi camera operators who regularly risk their lives working for news agencies and British networks in Baghdad.
