Tata Sky, the Indian satellite TV venture operated by News Corp.’s Star group and local conglom Tata, has signed up its millionth subscriber almost exactly a year after launch.
Company now has 120 channels and has added several interactive functions. It hopes to have 8 million subs by 2012.
Tata Sky is the country’s third satellite platform after Zee’s market leader Dish TV and pubcaster Doordarshan’s platform.
Publishing empire Maran and Malaysia’s Astro will launch Sun Direct TV at the end of the year. Two other groups, led by industrial groups Reliance and Bharti, are also mulling entering the market (Daily Variety, April 9).
