The evolution of 'Butterfly'

At a dinner celebrating the Gotham premiere of “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” on Nov. 14, pic’s producer Kathleen Kennedy explained the film’s evolution.

Johnny Depp was our first choice to star in the movie,” she said. “But he ended up running into all sorts of scheduling problems because of ‘Pirates.’ ”

After hiring French actor Mathieu Amalric and several French actresses, Kennedy and helmer Julian Schnabel decided to make it a French rather than an English-language pic. “It felt silly to do the movie in English and have French actors trying to have English accents,” she said.
