HOLLYWOOD — The Black Eyed Peas showed Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine some love Thursday when they lauded his career at their Peapod Foundation Benefit Concert.
Standing before a packed house at the Avalon Theater, group’s will.i.am explained how they “got it started”
with Iovine, saying: “He’s the only person who believed in us when we weren’t signed. In 1996, Jimmy said, ‘You can sign with other labels for millions, but if you don’t sell, they won’t let you make records. At Interscope, you’ll always make records.’ Here we are, 20 million records sold and two Grammys later.”
In its third year, the Peapod event has become a staple of pre-Grammy festivities. In addition to the Peas pumping up the volume, ’07 Grammy nominees John Legend and Sergio Mendes took the stage, while guitarist Slash contributed a few strings to the Peas hit “Let’s Get It Started.”
