Those Vineyard Theater folks are a dirty bunch.
The 25th-anniversary gala for the Off Broadway theater company included its share of wholesome moments, including the awarding of the Vineyard’s inaugural Paula Vogel award to up-and-coming scribe Tarell Alvin McCraney.
But really, the whole event (held Monday) was just an excuse to dress up, go to the Rainbow Room and talk about sex.
Julianne Moore and Bart Freundlich kicked things off when they declared their affection for the Vineyard a.d. by announcing from the podium, “We have both, individually and as a couple, made love to Doug Aibel.”
S. Epatha Merkerson, who performed a couple of the Billie Holiday songs she sang at the Vineyard in a 1987 show, countered that she never did make love to Aibel — although she used a saltier expletive.
“I wanted to sleep with Doug Aibel,” Vogel said.
“I have not slept with Doug Aibel,” added “A Chorus Line” thesp and “[title of show]” helmer Michael Berresse. “Yet.”
