Japanese actress Kyoko Kishida, who starred in 1964’s “Woman in the Dunes,” died of a brain tumor Dec. 17 in Tokyo. She was 76.
Kishida’s biggest role was the unnamed woman in the avant-garde feature about a young woman held captive in a pit by villagers who force her to harvest sand for them. Directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, the bleakly erotic film received prizes at the Cannes and New York Film Festivals.
Kishida worked constantly until her death and was best known for voiceover work on animation projects such as the long-running TV series “Moomin.”
