Showtime greenlights ‘Side Effects’

Tim Robbins wrote the pilot and will direct

Showtime is filling its prescription for “Possible Side Effects.”

Cabler has officially greenlit production on a pilot for the hourlong drama, which hails from exec producers Tim Robbins and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas. Robbins wrote the pilot and will direct.

Project has been in the works as a script since spring (Daily Variety, March 8).

“Possible Side Effects” has a two-pronged focus. In addition to exploring the dysfunctional family dynamics of the main characters, pilot will examine the politics, research, bureaucracy, miraculous cures and greed that accompany the pharmaceutical industry’s search for the next billion-dollar drug.

Showtime topper Robert Greenblatt picked up the Steven Spielberg pilot “The United States of Tara” over the summer (Daily Variety, July 15). Exec is expected to pick up one or more other pilots by year’s end.

Goldsmith-Thomas, who produced the CBS drama “Queens Supreme” five years ago, has a deal with HBO to produce films, series and specials related to the “American Girl” franchise.
