Seigenthaler leaves NBC news

Anchor moved aside as net looks to cut costs

John Seigenthaler, anchor of the weekend editions of NBC’s “Nightly News,” is leaving the network as his contract was not renewed.

The anchor, who was also a contributor to MSNBC, was moved aside as the net looks to cut costs, merging the news operations of MSNBC and NBC News.

Seigenthaler was said not to fit into the net’s budget or new approach, in which on-air talent is expected to fulfill multiple roles across NBC News platforms.

An NBC News rep said a successor would be announced soon. Candidates thought to be in the running include Campbell Brown and Lester Holt, both co-anchors of “Weekend Today.”

If either “Weekend Today” anchor is named, he is likely to pull double-duty on weekends.

Seigenthaler joined NBC in 1996 as anchor of MSNBC’s “Morning Line.” He became a substitute for NBC’s “Nightly News,” “Weekend Today” and MSNBC’s “The News With Brian Williams.”

He was named anchor of “Weekend Nightly News” in 1999 but was passed over when Williams was tapped as Tom Brokaw’s successor.

Seigenthaler gave his final NBC signoff on Sunday night’s broadcast.

“A special thanks to you, the viewers, for your loyalty to this network and, in particular, this broadcast,” he said. “And thanks to my dear family — finally, we’ve got our weekends back.”
