Network signs exec producer to two-year pact

“Bones” exec producer Stephen Nathan has dug up a new overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.

Two-year pact (with an option for a third) keeps Nathan on “Bones” as the second-in-command to showrunner Hart Hanson. Nathan was recruited by Hanson to join the show after its pilot episode.

“It’s been a great place to work,” Nathan said. “And now it seems as if ‘Bones’ will be on the air for a long time to come,” he added.

“Stephen is a fantastic writer who helps bring the heart and comedy that has set ‘Bones’ apart from other procedurals on the air,” said 20th Century Fox TV prexy Dana Walden. “This is such an important show for us and the network, and we couldn’t be more pleased with what Hart and Stephen have accomplished creatively this year.”

Walden said “Bones” was an important show for the studio and Fox, and she lauded Hanson’s and Nathan’s handling of the show this year.

“It was important to us to keep this team together, as well as to keep Stephen at 20th to develop for us down the road,” she said. “He’s incredibly talented, and we’re thrilled to solidify our relationship with him.

Nathan will continue to focus his attention on “Bones” next year — the show’s third season, which he notes is key as it reaches the magical syndication episodic threshold.

After that, he plans to turn his attention to new development. Nathan said he’d like to come up with more shows in the vein of “Bones,” which boasts a mix of character-driven comedy and procedural drama that’s rare in primetime.

“I had a 20-year background in comedy before moving to drama, and this is a great melding of the two styles for me,” he said. “It’s just such a unique show, at least in my experience. We’re really able to do a style of show that I think has been missing from TV.”

Beyond “Bones,” Nathan’s recent credits include “Joan of Arcadia” and “Family Law.” Before that, he worked on laffers including “Jesse,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Double Rush” and “Love & War.”
