Gameshow '3 Kings' produced by RDF USA
MTV is getting into business again with Ashton Kutcher.Net has greenlit a pilot for potential series “3 Kings,” an unconventional reality gameshow produced by RDF USA (“Wife Swap”) and Katalyst Films, the shingle Kutcher runs with Jason Goldberg. Adaptation of a British pilot of the same name puts a twist on nonscripted competition. It will center on challenges in three physical categories: speed, skill and pain. All contestants in “3 Kings” will be masked, and challenges will take place primarily in a ring in front of an arena audience. Contestants will engage in stunts ranging from the goofy to the painful, challenging a reigning “king” in one of the three skill areas. (In the British pilot, one challenge had contestants tossing items at a bull until the bull chased them out of the ring.) If the challenger wins, the king is unmasked, and the challenger ascends to the throne. If the challengers loses, he or she will be unmasked. Show is an RDF USA production in association with Katalyst. Chris Coelen, Greg Goldman, Goldberg and Kutcher are aboard to exec produce. The Coelen-run RDF USA is making a name for itself as it combines formats from overseas with U.S. talent. Shingle has a Shaquille O’Neal weight-loss show set for June on ABC; it’s based on a U.K. skein featuring a prominent soccer star. Shingle is also moving ahead on the pilot of the Carson Kressley-fronted “How to Look Good Naked” for Lifetime, also based on a U.K. project, and is the force behind ABC’s “Wife Swap” and A&E’s “The Coreys.” Katalyst has done a number of series with the Viacom net. His long-running MTV hit “Punk’d” is poised to enter its final season. Shingle is set to bow on MTV the reality show “Adventures in Hollyhood,” about the efforts of the Three 6 Mafia to break into Hollywood, and is in development on reality series “Room 401.” Producers aren’t saying who will serve as contestants on “Kings,” but it’s likely at least some will be celebs or various friends of Kutcher’s. It’s also possible Kutcher will make appearances himself. “Kings” will also offer the potential for goofy promotions, with masked kings on red carpets and in other venues in the spirit of Kutcher’s trademark Hollywood shtick. Katalyst recently landed a pilot deal with CBS for “Game Show in My Head,” another British gamer import involving wacky tasks.
