20th Century signs Harris for development pact

“How I Met Your Mother” co-exec producer Chris Harris has sealed an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.

Under the two-year pact (with option for a third year), Harris will continue on “How I Met Your Mother” while also turning his attention to developing new half-hours.

Deal couldn’t come at a better time for Harris, whose wife is scheduled to give birth next Monday. “If it wasn’t for that, this deal would be the most exciting thing in my life right now,” Harris said.

Twentieth Century Fox TV chairman Dana Walden said “Mother” creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas were pleased to hear that Harris would be sticking with the show.

“Everyone who works with him is touched by how funny he is,” Walden said. “He’s a terrific team player and does a great job on ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ We’re very excited about his development.”

Harris said making sure “Mother” is a success remains his top priority but that he also has fresh series ideas ready to be developed. Scribe also said he’s bullish on the half-hour form, even though it has struggled of late.

“It’s a real time of confusion, where people don’t know what works,” he said. “But there’s also an opportunity. Because people aren’t really sure what the audience is looking for, there’s an opportunity for anyone developing to come up with a great new idea.”

As for 20th, Harris said he’s been impressed with the studio’s support of “Mother,” and that he “trusts” the people who work there.

“They also have the friendliest guys at the front gate,” he said.

Harris’ other credits include “Late Show With David Letterman” and “Jake in Progress.”
