Fox ties up ’24’s’ Turner

Regular director will also work on other shows

TV director Brad Turner — a regular “24” helmer — has signed a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.

New deal will keep Turner in the regular mix next season on “24,” directing at least 10 segs; he’ll also helm several other shows. The following year, he’ll turn his attention to developing and directing pilots.

Turner has created a niche for himself by directing the first regular episode (the one after the pilot) of several series, including “Prison Break” and “Standoff.” This year, he’ll do the same with Fox’s new New Orleans-set entry, “K-Ville.”

“It’s kind of like doing the pilot over again,” he said. “Whatever they learn from the pilot, they give me those notes and we can improve upon. It’s a transitional role, from the richness and newness of the pilot to the way the series will look. I don’t remember ever meeting any other director who regularly does this — for the third year in a row, though, this has been my thing to do with Fox.”

Turner said he appreciated that 20th Century Fox TV recognized his contribution on “24.” This upcoming year (the show’s seventh season), he’ll serve as a co-exec producer on “24” as well, which means he’ll be more involved with the show as it undergoes a creative overhaul.

“This is a tough show to do; it’s a filmmaker’s show,” he said. “This is not one of those shows where you can lay back and relax. You’ve got to push forward and renew it. I’m quite sure we’ll be able to take it on.”

As a co-exec producer, Turner added, he’d now “have more input in the script and casting.”

Twentieth Century Fox TV prexy Gary Newman said Turner “did outstanding work on two of our most important shows, ’24’ and ‘Prison Break.'”

“The opportunity to bring him on ’24’ fulltime is irresistible,” Newman said. “He was exactly what we were looking for when looking to attach a director. He’s fantastic with action and emotional storylines and works great with talent and writers.”

Turner’s other credits include “Stargate: Atlantis,” “Alias,” “Dead Like Me” and “Smallville.”
