Fox orders second season of ‘Lyrics’

Network renews karaoke-contest show

Fox has picked up karaoke-contest show “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” for a second season.

Net has renewed the summer skein for what’s believed to be 13 episodes.

“Lyrics” has been one of the few network shows to draw solid ratings this summer.

The half-hour drew a 3.4 rating/10 share in its opening week last Wednesday, and nearly 8.3 million viewers overall from 9:30 to 10 p.m.

Fox could air the second season again next summer or use it mid-season, insiders said. Episodes currently air Wednesday at 9:30 and Thursday at 8:30.

Series, from RDF USA and Brad Lachman Prods., features contestants singing for cash prizes by remembering deceptively difficult lyrics to well-known pop songs. Wayne Brady hosts.

“Lyrics” is one of two similarly themed shows. The other is NBC’s “The Singing Bee.” Both singing competish shows have enjoyed strong starts in a summer littered with duds. “Singing Bee” garnered a 5.1 rating in its opening week but fell this week, according to same-day Nielsen estimates.

News of the “Lyrics” renewal comes after NBC earlier this week announced plans to continue “Singing Bee” into the fall.
