Discovery Channel and its Science Channel sibling have appointed Tom Cosgrove exec VP-chief operating officer of both networks.
Cosgrove achieved notable success since becoming senior VP-general manager of the Science Channel in January, presiding over an 18% gain in total primetime viewers this summer (March 28-Aug. 26). Science grew by a strapping 25% in adults 18-49 and by 21% in adults 25-54.
Science is also the 12th fastest-growing network in basic cable, adding 7.3 million subscribers in the past year to swell its total to 49.88 million.
Cosgrove succeeds Doug Coblens in the dual post; Coblens shifted over to exec VP of business strategy and new media for Discovery Communications.
Before Discovery, Cosgrove spent 30 months as general manager for TV Guide Channel. Before that, he was senior VP of programming strategy for ABC Family.
Cosgrove reports to Jane Root, prexy-general manager of Discovery Channel and Science Channel.
