Jay D. Roth to receive Guild's Life Member Award

The Directors Guild of America has selected longtime national exec director Jay D. Roth to receive its Honorary Life Member Award.

Kudo will be presented Jan. 26 at the 60th annual DGA Awards at the Century Plaza. He’s the 42nd recipient of the award.

“Jay is a true industry leader, admired and trusted by all sides,” said DGA President Michael Apted. “His skill, his intelligence, his energy and his real love of the DGA and what it stands for are priceless assets to our Guild and the entertainment industry.” He’s a remarkable man with a brilliant mind and great insight. If there’s anyone who can find himself in a labyrinth, pick his way through and come out the other side — it’s Jay.

Roth came to the DGA in 1995 after a career practicing labor law in the entertainment industry as managing partner of Taylor, Roth, Bush & Geffner, where he specialized in repping the guilds, labor organizations and pension, health and welfare funds. Since then, the DGA has negotiated four basic contract agreements with studios and networks.

During his tenure, Roth has led efforts to overhaul the management of its core functions including collective bargaining, organizing, jurisdiction and member support. He’s also created new departments in communications, credits, diversity, government affairs, organizing and research, and supervised efforts to improve the physical infrastructure of the DGA.

Secretary-Treasurer Gilbert Cates said, “I have worked with him for going on 25 years now and, no matter how difficult or obscure the situation, it is his laser-sharp ability to slice through to the core of the problem that most often reveals the best solution.”
