America Ferrera made geek chic in a performance that was more than funny — it was wise, soulful and profoundly moving. It was also an important performance, for who among us did not see true beauty — inside and out — in “Ugly Betty”? That little gal with the specs, braces and Guadalajara poncho made us all take a serious look at our own prejudices and assumptions and, in doing so, made us better people. For comedy acting, that’s radical!

It’s hard to imagine Ferrera not taking home the Emmy this year. That said, no one in his right mind last year would have predicted that Julia Louis-Dreyfus would beat sure-thing Lisa Kudrow (for HBO’s “The Comeback”). And it could happen again. Louis-Dreyfus is popular, hilarious and risky as hell — it’s not easy to love old Christine — and it just may bring her more gold.

As deaf, dumb and blind (especially dumb) as the Emmy nominators were in the drama categories this year, it’s amazing they were so good at judging comedy. In the best actor and actress categories, for example, there’s not a dud in the bunch.

For best actress, Felicity Huffman did do some very good — and very dramatic, given the category — work on “Housewives” this year, and Mary-Louise Parker did some likewise heavy lifting on “Weeds.” But in this group, this year, I’d be patriotic and vote for America.

Only two of these women, Tina Fey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, are nominated for their work in shows that couldn’t possibly be classified as anything but comedies. The other three are in dramas with comedic elements, which is apparently what’s necessary to get a quorum these days. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Academy go with Louis-Dreyfus again. (The best predictor of whether you’ll win one seems to be whether you already have.) America Ferrera would be a smarter choice, and she’s that good.

America Ferrera will and should win the Emmy for her breakout role as Betty Suarez on ABC’s “Ugly Betty.” The actress is utterly charming as the very intelligent ugly duckling swimming with the beautiful and fashion-savvy sharks. Notwithstanding Ferrera’s talent and exceptional comedic timing and amusingly tragic persona, Emmy voters will be especially attracted to the themes of diversity and “beauty is more than skin deep” “Ugly Betty” promotes. America is rooting for her, and so will the Emmy voters.

Critics’ reactions in all categories were collected by TCA member Kathy Tracy.
