'Idol' pair look for 'Next Great American Band'

Fox’s “American Idol” doesn’t return until January, but the many fans of the talent competish have something to bide their time with this fall.

“The Next Great American Band” comes from “Idol” producers 19 Television and FremantleMedia North America, led, respectively, by Fuller and Frot-Coutaz.

Show gives Fuller and Frot-Coutaz a chance to expand their competition domination into the fall, having already locked the winter and spring with “Idol” and the summer with “America’s Got Talent” (in the case of Fremantle) and “So You Think You Can Dance” (in the case of 19).

Fuller and Frot-Coutaz also have a chance to finally solve Fox’s Friday woes; net hasn’t been able to successfully launch a show on the night in years.

Project additionally presents an opportunity for Fuller and Frot-Coutaz to expand their scope — there are no age limits on “American Band,” unlike “Idol.” But it won’t be easy: Bands have been a tough sell in reality TV, with shows like “Rock Star” failing to make it big.
