C4 denies plea to stop ‘Diana’ pix

Network intends to broadcast crash photos

U.K. web Channel 4 intends to broadcast photographs of Princess Diana’s fatal car crash in a documentary today despite a request from her sons, Princes Harry and William, not to do so.

In a letter to Channel 4 from the princes’ private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton asked: “If it were your or my mother dying in that tunnel, would we want the scene broadcast to the nation? Indeed, would the nation so want it?”

The letter asked Channel 4 to remove several images of the crashed car with Diana still inside it and of a medic treating her.

But C4’s new creative topper, Julian Bellamy, insisted the images, for inclusion in the docu “Diana: The Witnesses in the Tunnel” — a reference to the Paris tunnel where the fatal accident took place August 1997 — were in the “public interest.”

He said: “We would like to make clear that it was not our intention in commissioning this program to cause (the princes) distress and we do not believe the film is in any way disrespectful to the memory of Princess Diana. Those images that are included have been selected with due consideration for the feelings of the relatives of those involved.

“We believe, in the context, the photographs and the assembled interviewees provide the most detailed and credible eyewitness account yet delivered of an event of international importance that for 10 years has been obscured by claim and counter-claim.

“The program goes no further visually or in tone than many previous British TV and newspaper reports.”
