ABC pulls ahead in news race

'World News' on top of the world

ABC News’ “World News” won its first quarter in more than a decade as Charles Gibson pulled ahead of NBC’s Brian Williams in the evening news ratings.

For the quarter, “World News With Charles Gibson” averaged 8 million viewers, NBC’s “Nightly News With Brian Williams” 7.5 million and CBS’ “Evening News With Katie Couric” 6.1 million.

ABC’s was the only evening newscast to gain viewers during the frame, up 7%, while NBC’s declined 4% and CBS was down 9%.

In cable news, Fox News Channel extended its winning streak to 22 quarters and placed fourth among all cable networks, averaging 1.5 million in primetime, up 6%.

MSNBC was the fastest-growing cable news net, up 35% in primetime to an average of 468,000. CNN averaged 756,000 in primetime from April through June, up 8%.

In the hypercompetitive 8 p.m. hour, “The O’Reilly Factor” was up 7% to average 2.2 million viewers. Second-place “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” was up 72% in total viewers with 710,000, and “Paula Zahn Now” was down 2% to 594,000.

Headline News’ “Nancy Grace” also is a factor at 8 p.m. She took second place to O’Reilly during the month of June with 691,000 viewers, while Olbermann drew 597,000 and Zahn 524,000.

As the third-place cable news net at 8 p.m., CNN is trying out Headline News’ Glenn Beck in Zahn’s place this week and has been in talks with NBC’s Campbell Brown to anchor a show in the timeslot.
