Dummer and Saade to run nonscripted TV

ABC announced its new nonscripted toppers Tuesday, naming Vicki Dummer and John Saade to run the net’s alternative series, specials and latenight department.

Move makes official what Dummer and Saade — both senior VPs — have been doing for months, following the departure of former alt topper Andrea Wong, now CEO at Lifetime.

Under the arrangement, Saade will focus more on development while Drummer will handle more current series and specials. But both execs will oversee all aspects of the department, from development to production.

Saade and Dummer will report to ABC Entertainment prexy Steve McPherson.

“John and Vicki have impressive track records, incredible creative instincts and really complement each other in their skill sets,” McPherson said. “They make a great team, and continually discover, develop and execute original alternative programming.”

Both execs have served as senior VPs inside the department, then under Wong, since last September. They’ve helped develop skeins such as “Dancing With the Stars,” “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” “Supernanny” and “American Inventor.”

Saade’s credits also include developing ABC skeins such as “The Bachelor,” “The Bachelorette” and “The Mole.” He briefly departed the net to serve as an independent producer, working as an exec producer on the show “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” but returned in late 2004.

Prior to his first run at ABC, Saade worked as a producer and director at Dakota North Entertainment.

Dummer moved to the alternative/specials/latenight department full time in late 2004; before that, she worked in both current and alternative. The exec joined ABC in 1996.

Before ABC, Dummer served as a senior program specialist at the National Endowment for the Arts.
