Network lands 'South Sydney Story'
Comcast’s Versus cable network has bought “South Sydney Story,” a multipart docu series detailing Russell Crowe’s real-life role as owner of an Australian pro rugby team.
The series, which will run on Wednesday nights on Versus over five weeks in October and November in its U.S. premiere, covers the crucial year in which Crowe and his partner, wealthy Australian businessman Peter Holmes a Court, bought majority ownership in the South Sydney Rabbitohs. By pouring money into the team, the new owners rejuvenated it after a string of losing seasons.
Later episodes of the docu include extensive excerpts of some of the games played earlier this year, many of which the Rabbitohs won. (The rugby season runs from mid-March to early October.)
Producer of the docu is the Australian company Beyond Prods. Beyond’s Mikael Borglund is co-exec producer with Versus’ Marty Ehrlich.
