Rinna to replace duo on red carpet
The red carpet has been rolled up for Joan and Melissa Rivers as TV Guide Channel has opted to play nice with celebrities at awards shows.
Lisa Rinna, who wowed audiences during a stint on “Dancing With the Stars,” will replace the wisecracking duo on red carpet pre-shows. Rinna will debut Sept. 16 for the Emmy Awards. Her contract covers four other annual events: the Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Rinna has covered the Golden Globes, Oscars and Emmys for “Access Hollywood”; she has displayed her fashion sense as as owner-creator of Belle Gray, a California clothing boutique.
“The overall audience pie for these shows is expanding,” Ryan O’Hara, president of TV Guide Channel, said, declining to offer specific reasons for not renewing the contract of Rivers and her daughter.
E! Entertainment TV has been giving TV Guide Channel a run for its money, using Ryan Seacrest at red-carpet events. Joan and Melissa ankled E! three years ago to join TV Guide.
Rinna, an actress whose first break was in the series “Melrose Place,”, said she jumped at the TV Guide offer because the key awards are concentrated in the first three months of the year, allowing her to pursue other showbiz jobs. She will make Broadway debut this summer as Roxie Hart in “Chicago,” co-starring her husband Harry Hamlin as Billy Flynn.
Rinna spent four years as co-host of Soap Net’s daily “Soap Talk” series.
