Telemundo O&O KVEA-TV Los Angeles has placed news anchor Mirthala Salinas on leave while station management completes an “internal review” of her conduct following the revelation earlier this week that Salinas is romantically involved with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
Salinas has been in a romantic relationship with the mayor for at least a year but continued to report on him as part of her duties as anchor and correspondent for the Spanish-language station owned by NBC Universal. Word of the pair’s relationship broke on Tuesday in a report in the Los Angeles Daily News. Villaraigosa’s wife of 20 years, Corina, has filed for divorce. Among the stories on which Salinas reported was the Villaraigosas’ separation last month.
“Given the seriousness of the allegations that have been made, we have decided to conduct an internal review of the decisions and events that led us to where we are today,” KVEA prexy-general manager Manuel Abud said in a statement issued Thursday.
Salinas said she respected the station’s decision to place her on leave and would cooperate with the review. “I am confident that when all the facts are analyzed, it will be clear that I conducted myself in an appropriate way,” Salinas said.
