Company in talks with RTL Netherlands
LONDON — John de Mol’s Talpa Media has held talks with Dutch commercial broadcaster RTL Netherlands over the future of Talpa’s struggling web Tien.
“We’re not looking to sell off the channel but rather take it forward,” Talpa’s Thomas Notermans said Monday.
Pan-European broadcaster SBS, which controls Dutch channels SBS 6, Net 5 and Veronica, has also expressed interest.
Tien, which initially broadcast under the name Talpa, has failed to shine since its August 2005 launch as Holland’s 10th free-to-air channel.
It never hit its target of 10% audience share, with ratings wallowing around 6%-7% despite its pricey soccer acquisition.
Notermans would not comment on media speculation that Tien could become RTL 10, its sports coverage siphoned off to a jointly controlled sports net.
