Sony invests in Dutch company

Tuvalu specializes in non-scripted biz

LONDON — Sony Pictures Television Intl. has made its first move into the Dutch TV market, following an investment in Hilversum-based production company Tuvalu Media.

Sony, which already operates local production businesses in Germany, France, Spain and the U.K., has taken an undisclosed equity stake in the company, and will also distribute Tuvalu’s full slate of programming, including both formats and finished programming.

“Our investment in Tuvalu is strategically important as it adds another supply line for our continuously expanding formats business and it extends the geographical reach of our production operations across Europe,” said Antony Root, senior VP, European production, at SPTI.

“This agreement also underscores our heightened focus on building SPTI’s non-scripted business in Europe and around the world.”

Founded in June 2006 by managing directors Roel Kooi and Taco Zimmerman, Tuvalu is currently in production on a local version of the BBC format “Make Me a Baby” for Dutch public broadcaster NCRV, as well as the original formats “How Safe Is Your House?” for SBS 6, “Twinzz” for TROS and “The 100” for NCRV.

“In SPTI, we have found a strategic partner to further our goal in developing, selling and producing TV formats, programs and content not only for the Netherlands but for the wider international market,” said Kooi.
