Brian Stelter, the college student who chronicled the TV news business from his dorm room, is picking up his blog and moving it to the New York Times.
Stelter, who graduates from Maryland’s Towson U. this spring, will become a reporter for the Times, blogging on the TV news biz for NYTimes.com and spinning some of his coverage into print stories for the paper.
Stelter, 20, a self-described cable news obsessive, started his blog as “CableNewser” during spring break in 2004. It quickly became the equivalent of a digital water cooler for newsies.
The site was later acquired by Mediabistro, renamed TVnewser.com and broadened to include broadcast news in 2005.
“NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams confessed he was a regular reader, but so is just about everyone connected to TV news, much like Jim Romenesko’s site on Poynter.org is a digital hub for print journalists.
Stelter ran the site anonymously for five months until the Times profiled him in 2004. The paper profiled him again last fall in a story that ran on the front page under the headline “The Kid With All the News About the TV News.”
