Megabox opens first Chinese theater

Firm planning two more plexes for next year

Korean exhibitor Megabox opened its first theater in China on Wednesday.

The upscale multiplex is located within a massive indoor mall in the high-tech Zhongguancun district of Beijing. The venue contains eight screens and 1,700 seats and offers a range of services, including the first VIP program of any Chinese theater.

The firm is planning to open two more plexes with a combined 17 screens in Beijing by next year.

Megabox joins a handful of Korean firms with interests in the Chinese exhibition market, including CGV and MK Pictures. Megabox is the third-largest thea-ter chain in South Korea behind CGV and Lotte Cinema.
