Maui Film Festival honorees

From the Dalai Lama to Claire Danes to William Hurt

The inaugural Maui Film Festival Visionary Award went to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama during his recent trip to Maui on April 24. The fest organizers said the honor expressed the org’s “appreciation for the many ways in which the deep wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism has inspired our commitment to present movies that set free tears of laughter, sorrow and joy in a world that doesn’t always seem to make sense.”

The actress will receive the Nova Award. She has “The Flock,” “Stadust” and “Evening” on deck this year.

The veteran actor will get the Navigator Award, bestowed on an artist who can sail through the shark-infested waters of Hollywood with his or her integrity intact. Currently onscreen in “Mr. Brooks,” the Oscar winner’s roles span every genre. Hurt’s got several films stacked up like 747s ready for takeoff in the next 18 months, including “Vantage Point” with Dennis Quaid and Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild.”
