Madelyn Hammond is returning to the Variety Entertainment Group as chief marketing officer, responsible for developing the global brand and marketing strategy for Daily Variety, Variety and Variety.com, as well as Video Business, Tradeshow Week, LA 411 and NY 411.
With the newly created title, she will expand the group’s worldwide partnerships with advertisers and brand marketers, and she will oversee Variety’s corporate communications, publicity and promotion, research and event marketing. She starts Jan. 1.
“Madelyn is a star performer in an industry that values its stars,” said Reed Business Information CEO Tad Smith. “It’s great to have her back.”
“Madelyn has always brought great innovation, energy and style to her work,” said Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart. “She is the first person in the paper’s 100-year history to hold the title of chief marketing officer, and we know that she will have a great impact on the paper.”
During her previous eight-year tenure, which concluded at the end of 2005, Hammond held numerous positions, including associate publisher of Variety and publisher of the lifestyle publication VLife.
She launched the Trendsetter campaign (which has featured more than 200 filmmakers, execs and actors) and expanded the company’s custom-publishing business. Hammond also inaugurated the Variety Screening Series and was a key player in the “Night Before” event, a pre-Oscar fund-raiser that has raised more than $23 million for the Motion Picture & Television Fund.
She will continue to be involved with the production and marketing of AMC’s “Shootout,” hosted by Bart and Peter Guber.
Most recently, Hammond worked for Mark Cuban’s Landmark Theaters, where she was instrumental in the launch of its flagship location, the Landmark in West Los Angeles. She also developed a multiyear partnership with Samsung Electronics and worked on an innovative transaction with Sony Electronics.
Before joining Variety, she worked in various positions for Columbia Pictures, AMC Theaters, Turner Pictures, MGM/UA and Sony Pictures, among others.
