The producer of South Africa’s most-watched and longest-running local drama, “Generations,” and the South African Broadcasting Corp. are being sued for 13 million rand ($1.8 million) by the composer of the soap’s theme music.
Musician Chris Frank is suing creator Mfundi Vundla and the SABC for allegedly selling his signature theme and background music to foreign countries without paying him royalties or getting his permission to use the music outside the country.
Frank has asked the Johannesburg High Court to issue an order restraining the SABC from further infringing his copyright by stopping them from syndicating “Generations” episodes until the matter is resolved. He is seeking $1.85 million in royalties in accordance with the SABC’s agreement with the SA Recording Rights Assn.
