COLOGNE — Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel and the European Union’s commissar in charge of media affairs, Viviane Reding, have been announced as speakers for the Medienforum NRW confab set for June 18-20 in Cologne.
Merkel, who currently chairs the European Union’s presidency, is the first German top politician in a while to appear at the Medienforum. She will be giving the keynote address to a panel that will include ZDF topper Markus Schaechter, film producer Jan Mojto of Eos Entertainment, Guillaume de Posch of ProSiebenSat1 group and Fritz Pleitgen, president of international pubcaster federation EBU. The group will be discussing the challenges for responsible television.
Reding will be speaking on two occasions, about media regulation in Europe and about European film within the confab’s Intl. Film Congress.
Organizers thus have put a clear emphasis on European and border-crossing themes, and another focus of the confab will be on electronic games. The Medienforum’s 19th edition introduces a new sidebar, the Convergence Congress, which will be discussing the crossover potential of consoles for games as well as for Internet protocol TV (IPTV).
