'Chelsea Lately' will tape the day it airs
E! is getting into the latenight wars, greenlighting a summer gabber to be hosted by comic Chelsea Handler.
Hourlong skein “Chelsea Lately” will tape the same day it airs and serve up the standard latenight formula of guests and comedy bits with commentary on the headlines of the day. Skein is expected to bow in July and will likely air at 11 or 11:30 p.m.
“Comedy works for E! in latenight, so the launch of a new series with Chelsea Handler is the perfect fare for our viewers,” said Lisa Berger, exec VP of programming development for the cabler.
Skein reunites Handler with E!, which last year ran her self-titled sketch show on Friday nights. Handler also starred in all four seasons of Oxygen’s “Girls Behaving Badly.”
Handler also has a busy standup career, snagging her first Comedy Central special last month. Her comedy book “Are You There Vodka, It’s Me Chelsea” will be published this fall.
New gig will put Handler in competish with “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” the NBC latenight skein on which she’s been a recurring correspondent. It also makes her one of the few femmes to topline a latenight gabber.
There’s no word yet on an exec producer for the show, though the skein will be produced in conjunction with 3 Arts Entertainment, which reps Handler.
