Drew Carey says he’s getting closer to landing the gig replacing Bob Barker as host of “The Price is Right.”
It’s been known for about a month that the comic had emerged as the leading candidate for the gig (Daily Variety, June 21). CBS had remained silent on the matter until Wednesday, when entertainment prexy Nina Tassler confirmed the conversations.
On Thursday, Carey — who is also hosting the Eye’s new primetime quizzer “Power of 10” — characterized the talks as having proceeded to the point of finalizing the details on a deal.
“It’s going back and forth. We call them one day, and they call us the next day,” Carey said. “I think it would be really fun to do. I wouldn’t have gone into negotiations with them if I didn’t think I would be good at it.”
Carey said CBS became interested in him as a host for the “Price is Right” after seeing taped rehearsals for the show.
“That show needs to be treated with a lot of respect, as far as its place in American culture,” he said. “As long as you do that and keep it going, I think it would be great.”
A CBS rep declined comment on Carey’s comments, referring a reporter to Tassler’s remarks on Wednesday.
