BBC apologizes to queen

Monarch did not storm out of photo shoot

The BBC was forced to apologize to Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday for falsely claiming that the monarch had stormed out of a photo shoot with Annie Leibovitz.

As part of BBC1’s fall sked presentation Wednesday, the pubcaster had shown a trailer for the RDF Television-produced docu “A Year With the Queen.”

Footage depicted the queen dismissing Leibovitz’s suggestion that she remove her crown. The photographer said, “I think it will look better without the crown because the garter robe is so …” The monarch cut her off, gesturing to her attire and responding, “Less dressy! What do you think this is?”

At the fall launch, BBC1’s channel controller, Peter Fincham, added: “Annie Leibovitz gets it slightly wrong and the queen walks out in a huff.”

The queen was then shown walking down a Buckingham Palace corridor, telling her lady-in-waiting: “I’m not changing anything. I’ve had enough dressing like this, thank you very much.”

The story received blanket coverage in the U.K. media on Thursday.

It turns out, however, that the final clip shows the monarch arriving at the sitting, not departing.

“In this trailer, there is a sequence that implies that the queen left a sitting prematurely,” the BBC and RDF said in a joint statement. “This was not the case, and the actual sequence of events was misrepresented. The BBC would like to apologize to both the queen and Annie Leibovitz for any upset this may have caused.”
