Musical proves to be just as popular overseas

Here’s more proof that Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay and the gang speak a universal language: “High School Musical 2” demolished local ratings records in its Australia preem Saturday.

Tuner also trounced the competition in its bow on Disney Channel’s Asia feed serving Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Coupled with its boffo perf in the U.S. and U.K., where it drew 1.7 million viewers in its Friday bow, “HSM2” has to date been seen by more than 44 million viewers worldwide, according to Disney Channel.

Rollout of the tuner, starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale as wholesome high schoolers spending their summer at a New Mexico resort, continues this week with preems skedded on Disney Channel outlets in Taiwan, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands.

In Oz, “HSM2” now ranks as the most-watched movie telecast ever in subscription TV homes with an average of 313,976 viewers.

Musical telepic also stands as the most-watched telecast of any kind with kids and teens in the 5-15 demo in Oz subscription TV homes with an average of 180,270 kid viewers. More than half of all kids watching subscription TV during its 6:30-8:30 p.m. timeslot were watching “HSM2,” which pulled in an eye-popping 55 share of the 5-15 demo. Not surprisingly, the boffo turnout for the telepic made Saturday the Disney Channel’s highest-rated day ever in Oz.

In Southeast Asia, “HSM2” set a new high-water viewership mark in subscription TV homes for a program premiere with an average of 752,000 viewers across Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong on Sept. 9. (Ratings for the territory became available late last week.)

“HSM2” easily qualified as the most-watched movie telecast on pay TV in the region, and was strong enough to rank No. 4 on the list of top movie telecasts on all platforms, behind only three theatrical pic telecasts on free-to-air channels.
