ABC will bring back its “Saturday Night Football” franchise this fall for a second season of college games, the net announced Tuesday.
Fully titled “ESPN on ABC’s Saturday Night Football, Presented by Southwest Airlines,” the showcase will return Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. with Tennessee vs. California. That’s followed by the USC at Nebraska showdown Sept. 15.
Return of the franchise isn’t a surprise, given its decent numbers on the always-tough Saturday night — particularly with young men. “Saturday Night Football” boosted ABC’s adults 18-49 ratings by 29%(2.7 vs. 2.1), as well as 61% with men 18-49 (3.7 vs. 2.3) and 68% with men 18-34 (3.2 vs. 1.9).
“The response to this unprecedented college football showcase was overwhelming,” said ESPN and ABC Sports prexy George Bodenheimer.
ABC Entertainment prexy Steve McPherson said the franchise “delivered a new audience for ABC, strengthening our schedule for Saturday and overall.”
The 12-week “Saturday Night Football” showcase continues on ABC through Nov. 24.
