Shonda Rhimes

'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Private Practice'

Current shows: “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Private Practice”

Resume: As a writer: “The Princess Diaries 2: A Royal Engagement,” “Crossroads,” “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge”

What shows have influenced your career: “I’ve watched a lot of television, but I’d have to say that the shows that have influenced me the most are ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show,’ ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Good Times.’ A varied mix, but all three shows had great character development and all three took chances. I’m still not over the cancellation of ‘Buffy.’ ”

Most difficult aspect of being a producer: “Marrying the financial needs of the show with the creative needs of the show. As a film writer, that isn’t something I had to take into consideration. With a TV show, it’s incredibly important to stick to a budget while at the same time never compromising my vision of the show.”

When do you find the time to write: “I do most of my writing late at night and early in the morning.”

Favorite shows besides your own: “I’m a big fan of ‘Weeds,’ ‘Lost,’ ‘The Closer’ and ‘Project Runway.’ ”

Personal gratification: “Where do I find my personal gratification? At home with my family. Where do I personally find creative gratification? Watching the words come to life, seeing how the actors interpret or put their own spin on what was written.”
