Josh Schwartz

'Chuck,' 'Gossip Girl'

Current shows: “Chuck” (NBC), “Gossip Girl” (CW) — both premiere this fall

Resume: Creator/exec producer, “The O.C.”

What shows have influenced your career: ” ‘Family Ties,’ ‘Quantum Leap,’ ‘Moonlighting’ (as a kid), ‘Seinfeld,’ ‘The Sopranos,’ anything by J.J. Abrams or Judd Apatow.”

Most difficult aspect of being a producer: “Staying creatively connected to what you’re working on as you try and balance budgets, and schedules, and ratings and personalities. You have to be a writer and a producer and those are two very different parts of the brain. Also, staying creatively focused despite reviews and message boards — remembering the purity of the original vision as a chorus of other voices kick in.”

When do you find the time to write: “You don’t, but you make it.”

Favorite shows besides your own: “The Sopranos,” “Heroes,” “Friday Night Lights,” “The Office,” “30 Rock,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Real Time With Bill Maher.”

Personal gratification: “When doing ‘The OC,’ I would meet young people who were so passionate about the show — and that’s what its all about. Making something that speaks to its audience…I assume this question was work-related, because if everyone else answers ‘playing with my dog,’ ‘long walks on the beach,’ etc., I will seem like a real workaholic.”
