HOLLYWOOD — The literati filled the Beverly Hills Hotel on Nov. 6 for the 17th annual Literary Awards hosted by non-profit org PEN USA.
Helen Mirren was on hand to present journalist Sahal Abdulle with the Freedom to Write Award while Taylor Hackford honored journalist Jerry Roberts with the First Amendment Award and Gore Vidal presented kudos to writer Clancy Sigal.
At the dinner, it was clear the WGA strike was on everyone’s minds.
“It must seem unbelievable to someone like Sahal Abdulle that people in this town are concerned about what they’re being paid for DVDs, as somebody who as recently as he was dodging bullets,” said dinner chair Jamie Wolf. “At the same time, to be fairly compensated is a form of free expression.”
